“It is up to communities to step up and protect our children’s freedom to learn.” Freedom to learn was a given in my lifetime. Yes, some of the teaching had omissions, but we had access to books. I love what the Freedom School is doing.
Thank you to Nikole and all of the authors and organizations who stepped up to sponsor this important program. Thank you for demonstrating how to push back and move forward.
I'm originally from Waterloo/Cedar Falls, but have lived in Kansas for over 20 years now, so I'm not always up to date on the happenings back home. So, who or what were the organizations that stepped up to make this happen? I'd like to write them a thank you note.

I attended and graduated from the Cedar Falls Community Schools. My husband attended the Waterloo Public Schools and graduated from Waterloo West High School, the same one that Nikole did. We both then went to the University of Northern Iowa, my husband taught at Logan Middle School in Waterloo and we also lived in Waterloo. So when I read this, I've never been so angry and embarrassed about my hometowns and homestate in my life. And I live in Kansas now!

The 1619 Freedom School. Initiative of Nikole Hannah-Jones and some of her Waterloo West High classmates. I believe they have a Facebook page.

Takes a journalist with courage to do this. Waterloo school leaders lack courage. Thanks for bringing this to us, Pat.
