My favorite band of all time. I was at that Ames concert. Saw them twice more, once in St. Paul and once in Des Moines.

Dave, when I saw them at the UNI-Dome, a speaker shorted out and Townshend harpooned it with a microphone stand at the end of the show. No guitar smashing, but that was sufficient. :)

Curious...what was that Ames ticket stub selling for? And I would argue Springsteen @ Hilton was the concert of the 80s decade!

Not sure on the stub price, Tim, You had to log on and become a member to view it. I also found a site that buys old ticket stubs!

Yes, I was at a Springsteen concert at Hilton in 1981 (he was there again a few years later) and I saw him again there in the '90s. Other ones I saw there in the '80s were Crosby Stills and Nash, Elton John, John Mellencamp, Diana Ross and Neil Diamond who broke the all-time Hilton concert attendance record set by Elvis in 1976. Queen also was there.

My brother who accompanied me to The Who concert also saw Frank Sinatra at Hilton in 1990 and got to shake his hand.

I was Arts and Entertainment Editor at the Iowa State Daily for most of my four years, so I spent time camping out for tickets for Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel. My new boyfriend (now husband) and I went to The Who concert and sat behind a stoned kid who kept repeating "Tha WHOOOO" over and over all night long. It was amusing for about 30 seconds.

Some of my most memorable concerts were at the UNI Dome, covering as an intern at the Waterloo Courier: Fleetwood Mac and The Rolling Stones. The young photographer assigned to the Stones concert with me saved my life, as both of us were nearly crushed to death by some large men who smushed 20-year-old me into the stage. Mitch alerted the bodyguards, and the big boys got kicked out. Oof. Journalism can be dangerous.
